Suffering from fear and anxiety? Do you have a dental phobia? Or just plain nervous?
The feelings of fear, nerves and anxiety for those patients suffering from a dental phobia are very real and can be very upsetting and difficult to overcome. We often find that a patient’s fear can stem from negative childhood experiences and ‘bad memories’ when visiting the dentist as a child. These patients often ‘put-off’ dental treatment they badly want and need, which results in pain and further anxiety, therefore creating a vicious circle that can be difficult to break.
In extreme cases, patients have suffered with constant pain and a lack of confidence in their smile for many years due to fear of visiting the dentist. However, modern dentistry has moved on tremendously in the last few years and most people find the experience at our clinic in Malvern pain-free and less stressful than previously imagined.
Treatment for nervous patients is gentle and encouraging
In addition, we will take the time to explain the treatment in some detail and during your visit, you will be very much in control. We may schedule a longer treatment session so that we can slow down and treatment is gentle and encouraging. We will agree on a ‘stop’ sign if you feel that you need a moment to catch your breath and your dental nurse will be on hand to support and reassure you.
Dental Sedation at Barnards Green for a relaxing experience
However, we have also found that dental sedation has helped many people to overcome their fear and enabled them to have dental treatment in relaxation and comfort.
Dental sedation is also known as ‘twilight sedation’ or ‘conscious sedation’.
It works by using a very safe sedative called ‘Midazolam’ to induce a state of deep relaxation. It is not designed to ‘put you to sleep’, but is used as a relaxant (although we do find that many patients naturally fall asleep during treatment!).
Most patients remain responsive and can understand commands, but the amnesic effect of the drug will mean that patients remember very little of the procedure afterwards. In addition, patients treated under conscious sedation will often lose track of time, and a very long appointment will appear to be over in minutes.
Patients treated using dental sedation remain very calm and relaxed throughout the entire procedure.
The sedatives that we use are extremely safe and the side effects are minimal which means that after a 24hr recovery period (no driving, cooking or operating machinery) you can return to life as normal!
We will take the time to assess your medical history prior to your treatment & sedation session to ensure that you are entirely suitable. However, we do find that most patients who are nervous, worried or anxious can be treated using conscious sedation.
